The Client

Winston Express Haulage provides comprehensive transport services covering local, country and interstate destinations. With a fleet of 55 trucks and over 30 trailers, the business was rapidly outgrowing its existing facility in Western Sydney and needed considerably more space to achieve its growth plans.

The Brief

During the consultation process, the leadership team at Winston Express Haulage explained that their current facility was hampering future growth and restricting the services they could provide to their customers.

Our brief was to design a large, open warehousing space to act as a depot, mechanical workshop and freight storage area for the company’s fleet. Providing 3PL warehousing and storage facilities is a key part of Winston’s service offering, so a generously sized structure was essential.

The Scope

Steelcorp’s scope included the fabricated hot-dipped galvanised steel package, purlins and girts, and external steel cladding.

Along with providing 3D structural steel drawings, engineering certificate and computations, we also sourced and supplied several industrial roller shutters, guttering and above-ground rainwater systems, and quality roof insulation.

Stramit Uniguard™ Fire Resisting Wall System and industrial fire egress-compliant access doors were also wrapped into our scope.

To open up additional outdoor space for loading and unloading, a large full-length cantilevered canopy was included in the design.

The Challenges

As the new structure was located within a busy truck haulage site, planning to work within the logistics of the business was critical. Our collaborative scheduling with the client and precision timing of various parts of the construction program ensured that the effect on business operations was minimised.

Additionally, the site is located in a tightly packed industrial area, so delivering the build with the least possible impact on neighbouring businesses was also a top priority.

Coordinating the firewall installation via access from a neighbouring property was unavoidable, however, the installation team worked quickly and safely to have the wall erected without undue disruption to the neighbouring operation.

The Result

Winston Express Haulage has significantly increased its warehousing and storage capacity to better serve its client base.

The warehouse structure improves both the visual impact and overall efficiency of the business, and ensures the site is set up to handle continued growth in the coming years.
