The Client

North Construction is a trusted commercial project builder with an extensive presence in regional NSW.

Working across a diverse range of projects within the commercial and education sector, North Construction reached out to Steelcorp after a successful bid to construct a sports cover at Singleton High School.

The Brief

Whilst Steelcorp had originally provided a proposal to an unsuccessful bidder on this tender, our awareness of the project requirements allowed us to streamline the initial consultation process with Project Manager Guy Swinfield at North Construction.

A large sports cover was to be positioned over two existing basketball courts, providing shade and all-weather usability.

North Construction required a design solution that was fully compliant with NSW Department of Education regulations and chose to partner with Steelcorp due to our strong experience with similar education projects.

The Scope

Steelcorp’s scope included the structural engineering design for both the sports cover and footings, and the manufacture and installation of the structure including concrete footings.

Our team handled the 3D shop drawing process, certified engineering design, and the structure package included hot-dipped galvanised structural steel, roof cladding and rainwater materials.

To satisfy strict bird-proofing requirements, perforated cladding was installed to the underside of the sports cover including trusses and fly bracing, along with a 1.5m cladded skirt around the complete structure. To complete the custom design, 750mm cantilevered eaves were included to provide additional protection from the elements.

The Challenges

Although the site had been thoroughly surveyed, existing underground pipes were found whilst excavating the footings.

This required a rapid redesign of the footings by Steelcorp's engineering team, providing a new footing solution that could work around the existing pipes.

Working swiftly to keep the project on track, the issue was resolved and the new design was approved, with new footing cage steel arriving on site within 48 hours.

The Result

This shade structure has made a marked improvement to Singleton High School’s learning and social environment.

Providing a comfortable outdoor space, a cool place to retreat from the summer sun, and a flexible events and recreation area, the sports cover delivered by Steelcorp has also enhanced the overall aesthetics of the school.

Sports covers are a functional way to improve student wellbeing, enhance sun safety and create a more inviting and functional school campus for students and staff.

Contact the Steelcorp team to enquire about our design and construct service for high-quality sports covers and shade structures.
