Types of Insulation for Steel Structures

IN BRIEF

  • The Building Code has specific insulation requirements for different building classes.
  • Steelcorp offers two types of insulation: Kingspan Insuliner and Fletcher Permastop blanket insulation.
  • High-quality insulation costs more, and insulating the walls, as well as the roof, will bump up the cost of your project.
  • Both insulations are NCC and AS/NZS compliant, water-resistant, and durable.

Steel Building Insulation

The National Construction Code (previously the Building Code of Australia) has a requirement for building insulation for various types of structures.

This encompasses a range of building types, including commercial, rural and residential structures. All of these steel-framed structures are subject to different thermal and acoustic insulation requirements, which differ depending on the class of building.

If your structure is a small rural storage shed, it’s likely that your steel frame insulation requirements will be different to those of a large commercial building. Knowing the class of your structure is the first step to understanding how to insulate your building – the Steelcorp team can help you with this process.

In general, any insulation should be:

  • Water-resistant and unaffected by moisture
  • Durable and resistant to rodent and insect damage
  • NCC (National Construction Code) compliant
  • AS/NZS 4859.1 compliant
  • Have the appropriate flammability index in accordance with NCC requirements

What Types of Insulation Does Steelcorp Offer?

At Steelcorp we offer two types of insulation for your structure: Kingspan Insuliner and Fletcher Permastop blanket insulation.

These products are specifically designed for commercial and industrial metal-clad roofs and walls, such as those found in storage units and warehouses.

Features of Kingspan Insuliner

Kingspan Insuliner has excellent thermo-reflective insulation properties and advanced fire performance characteristics, achieving a Group 2 classification to NCC fire ratings for wall and ceiling linings. A Group 2 fire performance classification means that the product can be used in most areas of buildings apart from fire-isolated exits and fire control rooms.

Insuliner provides 3-in-1 insulation, vapour barrier and radiant barrier protection. It is NCC 2019 and AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 compliant and has a Flammability Index ≤ 5.

Why We Use It

This insulation is made from a closed-cell core sandwiched between reflective foil facings to create the silver internal lining you commonly see inside a large commercial structure. Because it’s designed for warehouses and commercial or industrial buildings where the insulation acts as the wall or ceiling lining, it’s our wall insulation of choice.

Features of Fletcher Insulation Permastop Building Blanket

An Australian Made product, Permastop building blanket provides excellent thermal insulation properties, keeping buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It minimises the risk of condensation and helps to reduce energy usage, saving you money.

This glass wool bio-soluble insulation meets AS1530.3 (0,0,0,1). Additionally, the glasswool component meets AS/NZS1530.1 for Non-Combustibility, and the reflective foil facing component meets BCA flammability index requirement of ≤5.

Why We Use It

Permastop is a thick, soft, blanket-style insulation made from up to 80% recycled content. It is specifically designed to provide effective thermal and condensation control for metal roofs, plus it has excellent acoustic properties and helps to reduce rain noise.
